No longer the preserve of The Country House is the utility room. And for active outdoor people, it’s easy to understand the appeal of this space and what a desirable feature it has become. So, what exactly is a utility room and what makes for a successful one?
A utility room, also known as a boot room, is a dedicated space for storing coats, boots, hats, and items for your pets and the perfect place to remove muddy boots and shoes to prevent mess being trampled further into your home. It is the perfect space for multi-purpose practicality and organisation, bridging the indoors and outdoors.
Seating is an essential for a boot room so you’ve got somewhere to perch while you take off your muddy wellies. We’ve used a 40mm laminate worktop which is a good choice as it’s easy to wipe down and relatively inexpensive.
Choosing a darker colour may be a practical choice for a space that’s going to see its fair share of mud and dirt. Choosing the right colour tone will not only help you hide the muck but will make it feel like a cosy welcoming space.
Using full height fitted cupboards is a smart idea to maximise storage and to give a home to those tall awkward items like walking sticks and umbrellas. Tall cupboards can provide the functionality of both a boot room and utility room and provide a home to items such as your hoover and broom.
“Critical to the success of a boot room is plenty of practical storage. Choosing full height cupboards, deep drawers and a bench will help you find a home for everything as well as providing a stylish and practical space”. - Sarah Cooper, Senior Product Designer
