Working closely with the internal project and accommodation team from Newcastle University, a sustainable solution was developed for the latest Kitchen refurbishments at Bowsden Court.
The primary aim was to prolong the lifespan of the existing JT Ellis Contract Heavy Duty Kitchens (CHD) and deliver a modern and stylish environment that meets and surpasses the expectations of the students.
A detailed modernisation program was developed to provide a complete overhaul of the kitchens installed in 2008. The fact that these kitchens need refreshing, rather than replacing, demonstrates their suitability to the demands of student life. We were able to maintain over 75% of the original kitchen.
Our recommendation was to retain the existing carcases, as these were in excellent working order, and replace the doors and drawer fronts with identical Contract Heavy Duty components.
This has proven to be a great example of how existing products can be utilised and enhanced within a refurbishment scheme to provide many more years of trouble-free service. Preventing the need for replacement is a huge advantage in terms of product sustainability, reduced life-cycle costs, and waste prevention.
By utilising the latest laminates, glass and acrylic materials, together with on-trend colours and LED lighting, the kitchens were transformed in to a modern, stylish and homely environment.
If you specify a Contract Heavy Duty Kitchen, you’re specifying a product that will deliver a long-term and sustainable solution without the hidden costs of a cheaper alternative that doesn’t last and cannot be refurbished.
