Broadgate Park, Nottingham

Tired aesthetics, moisture-damaged units and an obsolete-sized microwave wall unit.

When Ellis was appointed to refurbish 720 student kitchens at Broadgate Park, Nottingham, these were the challenges waiting for us.

Exactly the kind of challenge J.T. Ellis is built for.

The Challenge

Years of daily student life had taken their toll. White tiles in a bedroom space, frontages worn by moisture from kettles and condensation, and storage that no longer worked as it should. The kitchens were in need of a refresh.

However, underneath it all, a stainless steel hob and sink section that was still performing well, with plumbing and electrics not worth disturbing. The task was to transform the space around it, not rip it out.

The-Solution

The Solution

Working closely with the client team, we developed bespoke wall unit widths to accommodate the existing hob position whilst maximising the size of the new microwave wall unit.

We also added a bespoke size working drawer, which massively added to the function of the kitchen.

Nothing was disturbed that didn't need to be. Everything that needed to be changed was.

The-Rooms

The Rooms

Our S1 & H1 ranges were selected throughout. These were paired with push-to-open wall units, keeping the look clean and modern.

The finish that transformed the space was our new Alloy Splashback in Battleship Grey, which replaced the dated white tiles and pulled the whole kitchen together.

A new high-pressure laminate top was supplied to the existing dining table frame to match the new worktop. It's the kind of detail that separates a refurbishment that looks patched together from one that feels considered.

The-Process

The Process

The pilot studio proved its worth. A collaborative design development period allowed the specification to be refined properly before the full programme began.

Post-pilot, the decision was made to move to handleless wall units, creating cleaner lines and a finish that feels contemporary.

Getting it right at the start means every studio that follows looks exactly as it should. No surprises, no rework, no corners cut.

The first 40 studios of the 720-unit programme are complete. The remaining 680 are to follow, and the standard has been set.
