Project Challenges

  • To refurbish the 288 bedrooms and reuse the original 27 year old Ellis cabinets.

  • Give these rooms a new lease of life at a fraction of the cost of a complete refurbishment

  • Salvaging as much as possible of the original furniture for recycling including unscrewing the original handles and metal desk legs.  The fitters had a lot of patience!

Project Solutions

  • The 27 year old 3 drawer unit with its dovetail drawers is transformed with new fronts and tops

  • There’s a new matching pebble grey back to protect the walls for our original bookcase

  • A new desk, bedside, headboard and wallboard

  • A new 4ft bed with a carbon neutral foam Mattress

  • The metal office desk legs were recycled as were the original handles

  • The Original Ellis bed, tops and drawer fronts are being returned to Egger as clean wood to be recycled into chipboard

“This facelift of 27 year old Ellis furniture is the most sustainable student refurbishment project I’ve ever been involved with. We’re still making our furniture using a double glue and dowel system which means that at the end of its life it’s far easier to recycle as clean wood compared to furniture that is riddled with metal cams and pins. This really does prove if you buy once you buy well.”
