We recently had the pleasure of catching up with Andy Gould, who has just celebrated his two-year work anniversary as the Group Sales and Marketing Director at Ellis. We thought this would be a great opportunity to learn more about him and his role within the company.
What responsibilities does your role include?
Delivering the sales growth required to ensure J T Ellis gain market share and underpin the profitability of the organization. This includes developing strategies to grow market share, finding the best people who fit the company DNA and creating a working environment that colleagues feel valued.
What’s a typical day like for you?
Usually I'm in the office around 8.15am and then plot my way through a series of meetings with the heads of sales and estimating. I am trying to be more field based but that is a challenge - supporting the sales mangers is important and its a part of my role that I really enjoy.
How has your role evolved since you joined J.T. Ellis?
If you work for a huge organization as I did previously then 'stuff' just happens. At J T Ellis you have to make the 'stuff' happen and my responsibilities have been far wider than I expected. I love the diversity of my role and sometimes being out of my comfort zone. I have had to widen my knowledge of the different markets in which we trade but we have some hugely talented people that have supported my knowledge gaps. We have been trading in these markets for decades so my learning curve has no ceiling.
How has J.T. Ellis grown or changed since you’ve been with the company?
I am a change culture manager. I believe any business should constantly challenge itself for improvement and not stick to the ideology that may be out of date. That could be better process, developing a pipeline of talent or improving the environment in which we work. I hope in my time at Ellis so far has supported and delivered positive change but there is still so many things I want to do.
What’s a project / product design you’re really proud of?
I don't get involved too much in design on specific projects but I am pleased we have introduced a robust CRM system, developed our showroom to be exited about, introduced some experienced and talented sales people who have integrated so well with Ellis stalwarts. We have also started to develop our senior managers which can only benefit both company as our talent pipeline evolves. Hopefully I have added some occasional fun into the organization - my singing alone is highly amusing and not in a good way! No one like a dull working environment.
What do you most like about working for J.T. Ellis?
The people here are superb. There is so much loyalty and a real desire to improve. I like the fact that we are so nimble and the speed of change can be rapid if its the right thing to do. The heritage of 140 years of trading is one to be proud of but with that comes responsibility, so J T Ellis can be the best modern version of itself.
Do you have a secret talent?
yes 😉
If you weren't doing your current job what would you like to be?
I always wanted to be a radio presenter / DJ - I think i would have been good at it and did a bit in clubs and pubs back in the day but discovered selling kitchens was more lucrative.
What was your first job?
I was a administration clerk for a wholesale electrical company. University was not for me.
What is your favourite film?
A bit predicable but probably The Shawshank Redemption
What's your favourite food?

Do you have any interesting hobbies?
